Our Work

Steps that make BCOMING a reality
Data Analysis

Sampling Strategy

The development of a coherent and consistent biological sampling strategy and the analysis of the data for BCOMING will enable a better understanding of the evolution and spread of pathogens under changing biodiversity conditions and ecosystem dynamics.
Tools

Risk mapping and forecasting

Mechanistic models and mapping tools available for actors planning surveillance and control programmes will help link risk factors to zoonotic pathogen circulation levels and develop more robust risk assessment systems.
Tools

Pathogen Detection

Rapid on-site identification of potential zoonotic pathogens from hosts and environmental samples will allow for a more standardized description of microbial (incl. pathogen) evolution and distribution in the ecosystem, and facilitate a fast response by professional healthcare workers/researchers.
Community

Participatory Approach

A sequence of three participatory workshops for the relevant communities and stakeholders in Guinea and Cambodia will include the co-development of an agent-based model, the co-construction of scenarios, and the deliberation of impacts of each intervention strategy on multiple indicators to facilitate a systems thinking-focused learning process.

Tools

Decision Support

The use of agent-based models (ABMs) will enable testing across diverse scenarios and  improve understanding of stakeholders on effective One Health system solutions, sustainable farming and forestry practices supporting biodiversity.

Conservation Strategy

Biodiversity

The development of guidelines and best practices to mitigate habitat fragmentation and biodiversity loss leading helps reduce the risk of disease emergence and transmission, while having better ecosystem services result in significant economic savings.

Surveillance

Integrated Systems

Co-constructed surveillance systems will be validated in all sites, resulting in replicable collaborative surveillance strategies, mechanisms, and tools that avoid zoonotic disease emergence.

Policy

Advocacy

Policy recommendations and joint policy actions will help to boost sustainability by building upon proposed biodiversity conservation strategies, while supporting the Global biodiversity agenda and the One Health approach.
